INTERVERTEBRAL DISC DISEASE
Overview
IVDD is a degenerative spinal condition affecting the discs between the vertebrae, leading to pain, nerve compression, and mobility issues. It occurs when spinal discs degenerate, bulge, or rupture, pressing on the spinal cord and causing neurological deficits.
Type I (Acute IVDD): Sudden disc rupture, often seen in small breeds, leading to pain and possible paralysis.
Type II (Chronic IVDD): Gradual disc degeneration, more common in larger breeds, causing progressive weakness and pain.
Symptoms range from back pain and limb weakness to paralysis and loss of bladder control. Treatment depends on severity, with mild cases managed through rest, pain relief, and rehabilitation, while severe cases may require surgery.
