Degenerative Myelopathy

DEGENERATIVE MYELOPATHY

Overview

Degenerative Myelopathy (DM) is a progressive neurological disease that affects the spinal cord, leading to gradual loss of mobility, weakness, and paralysis. It primarily impacts older, large-breed dogs, such as German Shepherds, Boxers, and Corgis. The condition occurs when the protective covering of the nerve fibers in the spinal cord becomes damaged, disrupting the transmission of nerve signals to the limbs.

How we at BARC treat this condition

While there is no cure for DM, rehabilitation plays a crucial role in managing the condition. A tailored rehab program can help slow progression, improve mobility, and maintain muscle strength. Techniques such as strengthening exercises, proprioceptive training, and hydrotherapy enhance coordination and balance. Assisted mobility devices, like carts and harnesses, support movement, while therapeutic modalities such as laser therapy and shockwave therapy may help address compensatory strain in affected areas. Working alongside a veterinarian, a structured rehab plan can improve quality of life and support the long-term well - being of DM patients.
